  How to Stay Calm

For days and weeks now-sometimes even months or years- you have been fighting to preserve your sanity while everything else around seemed to have gone awry.  You have struggled to remain “strong” no matter what.  You have always believed that was your duty: stay strong and do not show emotions.  Allowing yourself to “feel” and to express your feelings has been seen as a weakness.  You couldn’t allow yourself to be “weak”.

While your goal may be noble and necessary at times, the way you have gone about it left you feel less than perfect, less than healthy, less than well adjusted.  That you would want to remain clam in the midst of a storm (i.e., economical, financial, familial) it is understandable and rewarding.  However, you cannot allow yourself to do that at your own expense.  To become the “rock” everybody else thinks you are, you must at least:

  • Take care of your emotional well being.  Seeking help from an experienced mental health professional, a licensed psychologist such as Dr. Natalia Voinov would accomplish your desired goal and keep your sanity as intact as possible.

  • Take care of your physical well being.  Sleeping well, eating healthily, exercising enough would go a long way toward staying calm when everything around you seems to crumble.

  • Take time off to recharge your “batteries” and replenish your resources.  Whenever possible, swim or learn how to.

  • Surround yourself with supportive friends and family, plan activities or just leisure times with them.  Letting yourself be “victimized” by negative, angry, frustrated people would probably reverse any positive effects those strategies may have on your health.

  • Avoid or drastically reduce the time spent indoors.  Get out, walk, hike, run, have a picnic.

  • Drive less whenever possible.

  • Write poems, listen to your favorite music- whatever floats your boat.

  • Speaking of boats, take a boat ride and enjoy the view.  Breathe fresh air and celebrate every new beginning.

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, sweets – it is possible to enjoy a social gathering without reliance on unhealthy items.

  • Read light materials, go to museums – enjoy art and the people who made it possible.

Above all, seek professional help from an experienced, reliable, competent licensed Psychologist.
Be confident: the storm too shall pass !
