You have been undoubtedly affected by the downturn in the global economy, by the so-called swain flu epidemic, by friends’ misfortune, by your own family’s coping style, by all you hear and see on the news about the war, the crimes, the abductions. There seems to be an endless supply of bad news, but many of them are caused by social and political events over which you have little or no control.
Thus, we want you to turn the page and curb your news watching gene. Those news are likely to affect your view of life, they’re likely to bring about panic, anger, helplessness, and depression. When panic becomes your constant (however, undesired) companion, you’re likely to “honor” it by either staying indoors and letting your passivity float around, or letting your anger take over. What have you accomplished? Nothing in particular. At least nothing to write home about. Letting your anger take over, you may lash out at people (usually at those closer to you) and sooner -rather than later- you find yourself ostracized by peers and isolated by your own self-defeating behaviors. That’s the road to a full blown depression. Now, nothing can stand in its way.
Now, that you’re “officially” depressed, you may give yourself permission to ruin somebody else’s day (besides your own !), to become the grey cloud on a blue sky. You give yourself permission to eat more junk food than you’ve ever eaten, to spend more days doing actually nothing other than feeling sorry for yourself, and – by doing that- you have become the victim or the slave of your emotions. Does this sound backwards? Yes, it does because it is. You should control your emotions, you’re the boss of them.
To make it easier on yourself, there is always a psychologist, a mental health professional such as Natalia Voinov, Ph.D. to show you the way up from down, to guide you through the maze of your fears, to show you there are options you can and should consider. You don’t have to be miserable. Turn the page and go on to the true you. |
